History - Culture - Development

As the capital of Indonesia, Jakarta stands as the nation’s political, economic and cultural centre. Located on the northwest coast of Java, the city presents a compelling blend of heritage and modern sophistication.Formerly known as Batavia during the Dutch colonial era, Jakarta has evolved into a dynamic global metropolis, welcoming both business and leisure travellers. Its diverse population reflects Indonesia’s rich and multicultural heritage, shaped by Betawi, Javanese, Chinese and international influences. Geography

Jakarta is situated on the northwest coast of Java Island, covering approximately 661.5 km². Positioned at around 6° south latitude and 106° east longitude, the city enjoys a tropical climate characterised by warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year.

The landscape is predominantly low-lying, with an average elevation of approximately 8 metres above sea level. Thirteen rivers run through the city, including the Ciliwung River, which flows through its central districts. Jakarta experiences two primary seasons: the dry season from May to September and the rainy season from October to April. Its coastal setting along the Java Sea has long established Jakarta as a vital trading port and strategic hub.

Districts

Jakarta is divided into five administrative cities and one regency, each offering its own distinct character. Central Jakarta serves as the political and business heart, home to Merdeka Palace and the National Monument. South Jakarta is an upscale district known for its refined lifestyle, dining and entertainment, while West Jakarta is rich in history, featuring Kota Tua.

North Jakarta presents a coastal setting with attractions such as Ancol Dreamland, whereas East Jakarta continues to grow as a residential and commercial district. Beyond the mainland, the Thousand Islands offer a chain of tropical retreats, providing a serene escape from the city.

History

Jakarta’s origins date back to the 4th century, when it was known as Sunda Kelapa, an important trading port of the Sunda Kingdom. In 1527, it was renamed Jayakarta following its conquest by Fatahillah.During the 17th century, the Dutch established Batavia, transforming the city into the administrative centre of their East Indies empire.

Following Indonesia’s independence in 1945, the city was renamed Jakarta and designated as the capital. It has since grown into one of Southeast Asia’s most prominent metropolitan cities.

Economy

Jakarta is the economic powerhouse of Indonesia, contributing significantly to the nation’s GDP.

The city serves as the headquarters for major corporations, financial institutions and government bodies, reinforcing its role as the centre of commerce and governance. Key sectors include finance and banking, trade and commerce, manufacturing, as well as hospitality and tourism, all of which contribute to Jakarta’s dynamic and diversified economy.     Open 24 hours daily, the Business Centre caters to all your secretarial needs. Private Business Suites, meeting rooms, and a boardroom are available for rent, and a well-stocked business library is at your disposal.

    Our Concierge team is delighted to assist with airline reservations and flight confirmations, airport transportation, porter services, baggage collection and storage, local area maps, courier services, car rentals, sightseeing tours, recreational activities, religious services, shopping, and restaurant reservations.

    Certain fruits, including durian, mangosteen, duku, rambutan, jackfruit, and red dragon fruit, are not permitted in the hotel due to their strong odours and potential for permanent stains. Failure to comply with hotel policy may result in a cleaning charge of US$250.
